T-Shirt Necklace for Kids

Here’s an easy way to make a child’s necklace using recycled t-shirts as the necklace cord.

1. First I cut horizontal strips (about 1 inch wide) from the t-shirt.

2. Stretched it by tugging on it.

3. Cut it at the seams.

4. Accessorized with beads/charms.

5. Ended it by tying a knot on the loose ends to make a necklace.

Take a look at a terrific tutorial at Cucumbersom.com!

Recycling Yogurt Drink Bottles

This is something I made a while back but will be making again. It is a kid’s yogurt drink bottle that was recycled into a party favor. The fun part is that the bottle is re-sealed so the child can open it up and expect a surprise. It’s even more special if you put a personal note or photo inside the bottle.

This is a just a simple upcycling project. Clean out the yogurt bottle and put a new label on it with pretty paper. Embellish with ribbon. Stuff with tinsels and small goodies. Using the top of the bottle as a template, make a new cap with a round piece of cardboard that has been covered up with paper. Glue the cap into place once your bottle has been filled.

Origami Halloween Kitty Tutorial

origami kittyMy kids and I enjoy origami paper folding. It’s relaxing and fun to see what you can create with a square piece of paper. For every day crafting, I get our origami paper from the dollar store rather than craft stores where the prices are quite a bit more expensive. My littlest enjoys making her own designs and uses her imagination to make her end product look like “something” while my older one follows the instructions intently. Origami kitties are very easy to make so it will be a project that is repeated many times over. My daughter recently decorated a composition book with origami kitties in various colors. Here is a photo of her creation and I have also included a tutorial link on how to create a Halloween origami cat. Have fun!

Tulle Tiaras

blue tulleI’ve been working hard on these tulle tiaras for a couple of weeks now. It’s really not difficult to complete a tulle tiara but just a little time consuming to cut strips of tulle and to decorate.

This blue tulle tiara is make from several long strips of tulle about 1 yard long and 1 inch wide. I made ribbon like loops around the wire center to make this very poofy looking head piece. Then I tied ribbons strung with beads around the center wire.

maroon goldThis second version is made of maroon colored tulle and gold colored tulle that are cut into small 2″ x 3″ strips then individually tied onto the wire center. After tying, I trimmed the tulle down to make it less fluffy. I then sewed several different kinds of beads directly onto the tulle to give the tiara more sparkle.

Directions to make your own tulle tiara are found here.

How To: Princess Tulle Tiara

tulleTulle…how I love tulle. It reminds me of princesses and weddings and ballerinas. It is soft, flowy and easy to work with. It comes in many colors - even with shimmery glittery sparkles.

I think tulle loves me back.

Here is a simple tutorial on how to make Princess Tulle Tiaras made of flexible wire that is adjusted by tie on ribbons to fit the size of your head. These tiaras are easy to make but it may take you up to 30 minutes to complete one, depending on the amount of beads that you use. The more beads, the less time spent on a tiara because the beads act as “fillers” and you spend less time tying on tulle pieces. More tulle gives you a fluffier tiara.

First, here are sample photos of some Princess Tiaras. Photo 1: More Beads, Less Tulle. Photo 2: No Beads, Tulle. Photo 3: Fancy Eyelash Version sold on Etsy.

More Beads Less TulleMore Tulle, Lot FluffierTiara 3 Fancy Eyelash Version

Materials Needed:

  • 18″ Craft Wire, 16 or 18 gauge. The higher the gauge number, the more flexible the wire.
  • Beads
  • Tulle cut into strips of 2″ x 3″ but no need to be perfect.
  • Ribbons - about 40″ or more of the colors you like.
  • Needle nose plier

Step 1: Bend wire to create a loop on one end. The other end is open so you can slip beads through. If you are not adding beads, loop the other end of wire also.

Step 1
Step 2: Tie on tulle strips (double knot) and slip on beads. The number of tulle strips and beads you want to add is up to you.

Step 2
Step 3: Loop the other end of your wire to close.

Step 4: Tie long ribbons onto the looped ends.

Step 3

Adjust to head size and tie ribbons to secure.

Giveaway: Spring Wreath

Spring Wreath

It doesn’t feel much like spring over here.  The sky is overcast, humidity is high and the air is filled with vog - cough! cough!  - so I wanted to craft something Springish to make up for the yucky weather condition.

Above is a photo of my Spring Wreath made from artificial flowers, tulle, ribbons,  beads and buttons all knotted on a wire clothes hanger.  It measures about 10″ diameter.  If you want to make your own wreath, go to my Qassia site for printable directions.   This wreath is quite easy to make but it took me 3 days to complete because I kept adding to it and like all mommies experience, the in-between interruptions were constant.  Cost is minimal if you’re using recycled or leftover materials that you may already have laying around.

I’m giving this Spring Wreath away because I already have my last year’s Spring crafts up in my home (never took it down) and how could I box this up when it’s so springtime cheery?  I am not going to sell this size wreath in my Etsy shop because of the large size.  I need to make my wreaths smaller for easier packaging and shipping.  So you can have it if you want it BUT you will need to pay $4.60 to cover the USPS priority rate shipping cost.

I am listing this as reserved on my Etsy Shop.

To enter this giveaway, please comment on this post and and tell me what you plan to do with this wreath.  I will pick a random winner on May 8.  The winner will be notified and will need to complete the transaction on Etsy within 3 days of notification.  Open to U.S. addresses only.

Feel free to let me know if you have questions

p.s. Because I’m mailing this out in a flat rate box, I’ll throw in some other freebies OR pick an another item from my Etsy shop and let me know what you want when you comment.  You won’t be disappointed.
